The wider universe of discourse for this lecture is the interface between social sciences and the humanities. This was the dominant intellectual thrust of the so-called Lucknow School of sociology in the 1960s to which Radhakamal Mukerjee (RKM) belonged. Initially, by juxtaposing RKM's universalism to the holistic evolutionary theory, I bring together the earlier and later versions of scientific universalism, and RKM's universalistic stance leaning to the humanities. I next contrast the somewhat narrow paradigm of ecology in RKM, with trans-nationalist ecosystems postulated in the contemporary times. Further, the reverberations of RKM's humanistic universalism are traced in the 'text and context' as well as in the polyglot anthropology movements in the new anthropology. Finally, taking a cue from RKM, I note the contribution of incipient and full-blown anthropo-sociological universalism to the debate about the indigenisation of social sciences.

Each of the 29 officially recognized languages of India has its own script as well as oral and written traditions. In the realm of Hindi fiction, a genre called anchalik upanyasa (broadly, regional novels) has grown; it purports to narrate holistically the linguistic and cultural ethos of a region. This piece focuses on one Hindi regional novel, Adha Gaon (Half a Village), which presents the life-world of Shia Muslims in rural Uttar Pradesh in north India; the author, Rahi Masoom Raza, is himself a native of this village. Since there is no extant professional ethnography of the Shia Muslims of rural north India, I use Adha Gaon 's narrative to describe and interpret Indian Muslim ethnicity in this regional setting. My description and analysis proceed by way of contextualization and comparison, two key anthropological methods.

The paper focuses on Indian diaspora as a case study of globalisation and multiculturalism. It raises the question of a structural and historical distinction between the socio-cultural pluralism of societies like India and the ones overseas where Indian populations migrated and settled, and answers it in terms of dialectically related civilisations and settlement societies. A cultural analysis, using the comparative and theoretical approach of socio-cultural anthropology, leads to the positing of a 'field of forces' paradigm to orientate and position empirical instances of Indian diaspora globally. Three major issues affecting the overseas Indian communities are explored, namely, difference and translation, hybridity and creolisation, and policies of multiculturalism. The conclusion underscores factors such as the locationality of the analyst, the general pacifist orientation of diaspora communities and slippage between the imaginary and the imagined in relation to India that characterise Indian diaspora and influence its sociological study.
